Wear of the piston rod of an engineering oil cylinder is one of the common faults, which leads to the decline of oil cylinder performance or even failure. There are many reasons for piston rod wear, and there are different technical means for repairing it. The following are common causes of piston rod wear and corresponding repair methods:

1. Causes of piston rod wear
Improper operation
Exceeding the load range of the oil cylinder during operation, or overusing the oil cylinder, may cause the piston rod to be subjected to excessive pressure or impact, causing wear.
The piston rod is also prone to wear when it is subjected to severe impact force when starting or stopping (such as sudden pressurization of the hydraulic cylinder).

Poor lubrication
Poor quality of lubricating oil or insufficient oil volume can easily lead to increased friction and wear on the surface of the piston rod. Aging of oil, contamination by impurities or insufficient oil pressure can lead to poor lubrication.

Impurity contamination
Impurities (such as iron filings, dust, sand, etc.) exist in the system. When these impurities enter the oil cylinder and contact the piston rod, they will increase friction and cause wear. These impurities may be caused by poor sealing, improper design of the oil system or improper use.

Damaged seals
The seal ring in the oil cylinder is damaged or aged, causing hydraulic oil leakage or air to enter the oil cylinder, increasing friction and wear. When the seal fails, the pressure inside the cylinder cannot remain stable, resulting in uneven workload and piston rod wear.

Environmental factors
The working environment of the engineering cylinder is harsh, and the temperature is too high or too low, resulting in unstable operation of the cylinder. In addition, environmental factors such as humidity and corrosive gases may also accelerate the wear of the piston rod surface.

Material problems
The piston rod surface material is not hard enough, or the surface treatment is unqualified, which is also prone to wear. The selection and surface treatment of the piston rod material directly affect its wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

Poor piston rod surface processing
If the surface processing quality of the piston rod does not meet the standard, such as excessive surface roughness or uneven hardening layer, it is easy to cause uneven wear during use.

2. Repair methods
The repair methods for piston rod wear can be selected according to the degree and cause of wear. Common repair methods are:

Grinding and polishing
Applicable situations: For minor wear and surface damage, it is usually repaired by fine grinding and polishing. Grinding can remove scratches and depressions on the surface of the piston rod and restore the surface to smoothness.
Operation steps: Use sandpaper, grindstone or professional grinder for grinding until the surface of the piston rod reaches the required flatness and finish.
Advantages: Simple and economical, suitable for situations with light surface wear.

Surface hardening treatment (such as nitriding or carburizing)
Applicable situations: For piston rods with more severe wear, you can consider hardening their surfaces to improve surface hardness and wear resistance.
Common methods:
Nitriding treatment: Nitrogen penetrates into the metal surface to form a hardened layer, significantly improving hardness and wear resistance.
Carburizing treatment: After the piston rod is heated to a certain temperature, it is treated in a carbon-containing atmosphere to increase surface hardness and wear resistance.
Advantages: Improve wear resistance, suitable for high-load, high-friction working environments.

Surface spraying (such as laser coating, spray metal layer)
Applicable situations: For cases where the surface damage is severe and cannot be repaired by simple grinding, it can be repaired by spraying hard materials (such as chrome plating, spray ceramics or other wear-resistant materials).
Common methods: Spray chrome plating, spray carbide, etc. to form a protective layer to improve wear resistance and corrosion resistance.
Advantages: It can restore the surface size and enhance wear resistance. It is suitable for oil cylinders used under heavy loads and harsh working conditions.

Electroplating or coating repair
Applicable situations: For local wear on the piston rod surface, electroplating technology (such as chrome plating, copper plating, etc.) can effectively repair it.
Operation steps: Electroplating a layer of metal, such as chrome plating, on the surface of the piston rod to form a solid protective layer, which helps to improve the surface hardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
Advantages: The electroplating layer can provide uniform protection and improve the wear resistance and service life of the piston rod.

Replacement of seals
Applicable situations: Damage to seals is one of the common causes of piston rod wear. If the seals are found to be damaged or aged, new seals should be replaced in time.
Operation steps: Disassemble the cylinder, check and replace all damaged or aged seals, oil seals, etc. to ensure the normal operation of the sealing system.
Advantages: Solve the wear problem caused by seal failure and restore the normal operation of the cylinder.

Piston rod trimming
Applicable situations: For piston rods with severe wear, the surface of the piston rod can be reprocessed by mechanical trimming methods (such as turning) to restore its original size.
Operation steps: Send the piston rod to the lathe for processing, remove the damaged part, and then perform surface treatment.
Advantages: The geometry and precision of the piston rod can be restored, but the processing size needs to be accurately controlled.

Replacement of piston rods
Applicable situations: For piston rods that cannot be repaired or the cost of repair is high, the most direct and effective method is to replace the new piston rod.
Advantages: Direct replacement to restore the normal operation of the cylinder is suitable for cases with severe wear or poor repair effect.

3. Preventive measures
Regular inspection and maintenance: Check the cylinder system regularly, clean impurities in time, and maintain a good working environment and lubrication conditions.
Use high-quality seals and lubricants: Ensure that the seals are intact, avoid impurities from entering the cylinder, and maintain good lubrication.
Avoid overload: When using the cylinder, avoid overload operation and reasonably control the working pressure and load.
Environmental management: Ensure that the cylinder is used in an appropriate working environment to avoid the influence of adverse factors such as high temperature and corrosive gases.
Through the above repair methods and preventive measures, the service life of the cylinder piston rod can be effectively extended, and its working efficiency and reliability can be improved.
